FAQ

Q: What is BIM?

A: Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the “use of a shared digital representation of a built asset to facilitate design, construction and operation processes to form a reliable basis for decisions” (BS EN ISO 19650-1:2018).  BIM facilitates early supply chain and operational team involvement. Furthermore, it unlocks more efficient and transparent ways of planning, designing, creating and maintaining built assets, whether buildings or infrastructure, over their whole lifecycle.  Find out more about its benefits here

Q: What is the Global BIM Network?

A: The Global BIM Network is an international community of practice for public sector representatives to respond to global infrastructure challenges by leveraging the opportunities and benefits offered by digital technologies applied to the built environment, currently accomplished through the implementation of BIM. Find out more about its scope and aims here.

Q: Who can join the Global BIM Network?

A: The Global BIM Network is for the public sector and by the public sector. Public sector representatives from across the world may join and participate.  Members will share knowledge and build best practice for the global public sector’s use of digital innovation to foster the sustainable development of the world’s infrastructure.  Current membership consists of representatives from government ministries and agencies (economy, finance, construction, business and industry) and multi-lateral organisations (UNOPS, Inter-American Development Bank and Asia Development Bank). Individuals working in the private sector are welcome to access information and engage with us. To express interest in joining the Global BIM Network, please sign up

Q: What is the commitment for member countries and/or representatives of the Global BIM Network?

A: Time and willingness to collaborate are the key commitments we require at this time. Currently, the development of the Global BIM Network is supported by the Construction Innovation Hub and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). There is no financial requirement to join the network at this time.
