The BIM Conference is organised by the Association for Construction Industry Digitalisation (Būvniecības Industrijas Digitalizācijas asociācija), a public, non-governmental organisation. This annual event brings together experienced professionals in the construction and technology sectors who understand the difficulties and challenges of the built environment and are able to find the right solutions. The association also cooperates with a number of academic institutions to deliver the event.

Representatives of the Latvian state, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and representatives from other countries speak at the conference, sharing their experiences of the benefits of using BIM in both public procurement and production, design and construction processes.

The conference generally consists of three parts: presentations, discussions and practical workshops. While there is usually a fee to attend the conference, the organisers make recordings of the sessions, which are available free of charge after the event.

VNI (Valsts Nekustamie Īpašumi) is the most active customer of construction projects in the public sector and is working to promote the digitalisation of construction in Latvia. In accordance with the priorities of the BIM Roadmap, VNI developed guidelines for BIM in public procurement (including standard customer information requirements) and established a training program that allows other public sector organisations to be educated on the use of BIM.

The BIM Competence Centre’s website shares VNI’s guidance and templates in addition to information regarding BIM seminars, organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Economics and National Standards Body. The site also collects case studies from VNI’s BIM projects.

Part of an ongoing programme of research, summary descriptions, results presentations and key reports are published on subjects such as, for instance ‘identifying the investments required for the implementation of building information modelling (BIM)’ and ‘Evaluation of benefits from the use of BIM in construction projects and operation of buildings and collection of good practices in the use of BIM’.

Further research is planned to be published on subjects such as the cost of implementing BIM, construction classification systems for BIM projects and providing free common data environment solutions for public procurers.

Latvian Standard (LVS) is the national standards body for Latvia. It organises seminars and training courses on standards and standardisation in Latvia and Europe to help entrepreneurs, experts of technical committees, students and other target groups to get involved.

LVS created an e-learning platform for unlimited free access to courses and training materials related to standards and standardisation (registration via email is required).

The courses are designed to provide basic knowledge in BIM to a wider range of specialists. The e-learning platform includes subjects such as standards and standardisation, BIM management, BIM coordination, BIM modelling, risk management and information security management systems.

The Construction Digitalization Center (Būvniecības digitalizācijas centrs, BDC) is a structural unit of Riga Technical University (RTU). BDC has been established to promote the acquisition of digital processes in the construction industry.

The BIM training programme was organised by RTU’s Construction Digitalization Center in cooperation with the CMB Engineering Competence Centre and procured by the Latvian National Standards’ body.

The programme provides live in-person and online training for the practical implementation of BIM in Latvian construction companies and the application of BIM on projects. It covers a wide range of subjects from general BIM awareness through to practical classes in working with specialised BIM software and BIM modelling. Participant feedback on the training has been shared with the Ministry of Economy to inform further development of the Latvia’s BIM Roadmap.

The National BIM Council has developed this roadmap to digital transition for Ireland’s construction industry to increase adoption of BIM. BIM is at the centre of a digital transformation of the construction sector and more widely the built environment across the world. It is now time for Ireland to stimulate economic growth and competitiveness, while delivering value for public money through the wider and structured introduction of BIM, which is built on international standards and best practice.

The roadmap is designed to secure funding for digital transition, to set performance goals and to support the Programme ambitions of the Irish Government. This document is aligned to the Government’s commitment to the progressive adoption of BIM across the public sector’s capital programme. It also supports the key recommendations of the EU BIM Task Group’s Handbook for implementing BIM in the public sector.

The BICP’s (BIM Innovation Capability Programme) Irish BIM Study builds on the findings from the BICP’s Global BIM Study by providing an in-depth review of BIM in Ireland, with regards to key government publications, BIM champions, existing standards and procurement routes, BIM training programmes, current initiatives and maturity within public and private sector projects.

The study provides a snapshot of BIM in Ireland in 2017, demonstrating the interest it has gained in recent years and the remarkable progress that Ireland has made in building BIM capability. In recent years, the emergence of a BIM programme in the UK and other initiatives across the world have provided a focus for the Irish industry.

The Construction IT Alliance (CitA) BIM Innovation Capability Programme (BICP), funded by Enterprise Ireland, aims to capture the construction industry’s and academia’s capability to respond to the increased requirements for BIM in Irish construction projects. The BICP is a direct response to the ‘Construction 2020 report’, published in 2014. The report aims to promote the use of BIM and develop the appropriate technical skills amongst Irish construction firms so that they can compete in a market where BIM is a requirement. There are four distinct work packages to achieve the strategic objectives of the BICP, which include a systemic review of BIM adoption in international regions, with a particular focus on the enablers that can support national implementation programmes.

This Global BIM Study focusses on exploring the value proposition behind BIM adoption in international regions and what governments and professional bodies are doing to advance it. A number of countries from across different continents were explored as part of this study, as well as European countries. The study highlights the strategic importance of BIM to international governments and identifies the common themes or pillars present within international BIM programmes. These include public leadership, growth capability and industry capacity, building a common collaborative business environment and, above all, creating a more productive, less adversarial construction sector.

This Overview Report by the Australasian BIM Advisory Board (ABAB)’s Technical Working Group 1 is a first step towards developing BIM process consistency for the digital design, construction and operation of an asset – A Common Framework.

The Report reflects the collective experience of a number of public capital works delivery agencies, public policy makers, and asset operators from across Australia. Ideas were also sought from leading practitioners. Their experience, learnings and knowledge are critical to shaping BIM common practices and standards to be applied across Australia. Proven practices will establish the benchmark for BIM adopters, thereby enabling greater levels of BIM process consistency in its application across the construction sector and the supply chain.

The Report should not be read as a technical guide to BIM technology, its applications or standards as this information can be found in some other sources, including NATSPEC and buildingSMART. The use of other reports and documents from related BIM initiatives (such as the BIM Knowledge and Skills Framework from ACIF and APCC and the National Guidelines for Infrastructure Project Delivery from the Federal Government) is highly recommended in pursuit of a consistent approach within the industry. This document points to, and encourages, the use of these standards and applications to stimulate wider benefits across the supply chain from a public client’s perspective.

Effective information management in design, construction and administration requires order in many details. There are several standards that facilitate the processes and it is important to have consistent concepts and codes for different applications. The work in all parts of the processes, from early planning, through design and construction and to long-term management, is facilitated by consistency and standardisation. For efficient handling at all levels, common requirements and instructions are crucial. National Guidelines (Nationella Riktlinjer) have been developed to provide such common requirements and instructions, which adhere to established standards and accepted practices. These guidelines will be managed and further developed as new standards are established and new experiences are gained.

The purpose of the Guidelines is to simplify, streamline and harmonise the requirements and management of digital information for the built environment. They are created for those who make demands on digital information and for those who are affected by the demands. The guidelines can be applied for project implementation and asset management; they are suitable for buildings and infrastructure projects. They are developed as a basis for setting requirements for digital information deliveries and for meeting such a requirement.
